BGSU Variable Stars in Globular Clusters
Goals:
To detect and photometer variable stars in Galactic globular clusters, and thereby improve the census of such stars. In most cases, we aim to provide time-series photometry in multiple passbands, determine periods of variation, and provide phased light curves of each variable, along with mean photometric properties and characterization of variability class. Scientific topics of interest include:
- Statistical population studies (e.g., number of stars per unit luminosity of host cluster) to shed light on formation mechanisms.
- Determine mean magnitudes in BVRIK passbands for calibrating absolute magnitude (luminosity) once SIM parallaxes become available.
- Determine mean and minimum-light colors (e.g., B-V, V-I, V-K) to improve interstellar reddening measurements.
- CCD-based light curves of long period (Mira-like) variables at the AGB (and RGB?) tip.
