Observing Program with the BGSU 0.5-m
Telescope
We (Drs. Layden and Laird) are developing an observational
research program using the BGSU
0.5-meter Telescope and CCD Camera system. The aim is to involve
student observers in astronomical research which will be published in
refereed journals.
In May 1999, we received a new AP6
CCD from Apogee Instruments,
Inc, a new; 8-position filter wheel from DFM
Engineering, Inc; and a new PC from Gateway. In early June, we
have completed lab testing and characerization of the new system, and
are beginning a research program with the help of undergraduate Nick
Pearson and graduate student Boncho Bonev.
This project involves monitoring the brightness changes of 2-3
dozen "RR Lyrae" variable stars scattered about the sky chosen to
have low interstellar reddenings. We will obain photometry
(brightness measurements) in the Johnson V and I passbands over the
stars' light cycles. It is known that the B-V color index of RR Lyrae
stars can be used to estimate the star's reddening values, and it has
been suggested that the V-I color index is even better. However,
accuate V-I color curves exist for only 11 stars. When finished, our
larger sample will test this suggestion; in particular, we will
investigate the dependence of V-I color on the period and metal
abundance of the RR Lyrae stars. Confirmation and improved
calibration of the method will enable this technique to be used to
determine reliable reddening values toward globular clusters and
field RR Lyrae stars at low Galactic latitudes, where the reddening
is high.
Here is some useful information:
- Observing manuals for
stellar photometry with the new CCD system.
- Weather pages help you
plan your night. I recommend an animated map,
look under "US Statellite Pictures" for "United States Infrared
... time lapse loop".
- Specifications
of the new AP6 CCD.
- Learn about
CCDs (Charge Coupled Devices) from Apogee's "CCD University".
- Basic instructions for display of existing CCD images by the
Stargze Staff.
Here is a list of when the telescope is being used for photometry
(and who is assigned to observe then). During Summer Term, a Stargaze
is held at 11pm on the first clear night of the week for the
BGSU astronomy courses:
