Read Section 10-1, pp. 182-187 (" Giant Stars"), including
the centerfold on 188-189, due Wed Mar 16.
1) Summarize the major phases in the evolution of a star beginning
at the main sequence. In the H-R diagram below, draw the evolution
track of a 5 Msun star from the main sequence to the point
where it runs low on helium fuel, and label the major phases on the
diagram [Hint: look at
Figs. 10-3 and
10-5].
2)What is degenerate matter? Where and when can it be found
inside a star? Can it be found in all stars?
3) Describe the two types of star clusters. How do they help
us to understand stellar evolution and lifetimes?
