Simulations of the Dynamics of Vocal Folds Using the Immersed Boundary Method

Movie of 2D Model Vocal Folds

The animated gif below represents 21 snapshots of the positions of the boundary points which represent the instantaneous positions of the 2D vocal fold model. The direction of the air flow is from the right to the left of each frame, with the pressure gradient applied with higher pressure at the right end of each frames to the lower pressure at the left of each frame.
The movie above shows the motion of the 2d model vocal folds alone.
This is a movie of the motion of four sets of massless markers advected by the velocity field. Note that the times between sampling are long, so one should not interpret this too literally. More samples are needed to get a more adequate picture of the effect of the computed velocity field.
This movie shows the dynamics of the contours of the vx component of the aerodynamic velocity field.
This movie shows the dynamics of the contours of the vy component of the aerodynamic velocity field.
This movie shows the dynamics of the contours of the pressure. Note that the resolution is only 64 points across the region perpendicular to the inflow. Across the narrowest point there are only a few zones, so the accuracy of the computation of the pressure suffers.
