Experiment 11
THE CHARGE-TO-MASS RATIO
OF THE ELECTRON

ANALYSIS

1.  Use equation (1) to determine the magnetic field corresponding to each value of the coil current. Record the values in cells F24:F26.

2.  Use the expression for e/m ratio that you derived in the Prelab Questions, and calculate a value for each set of readings when the electron beam was focused on each of the three circles (this means three separate calculations of e/m) and enter in cells G24:G26.

3.  Average your three values and enter in cell F28. Determine an uncertainty for this "best" value and enter it in cell F29.

4.  Compare your average value to the accepted value of e/m, which can be obtained by taking the listed values of e and of m in your textbook and dividing them. Enter the accepted (textbook) value of e/m in cell F31. Find the percentage error between your best value and the accepted value and enter it in cell F32.
