Experiment 3
THE VELOCITY OF SOUND IN AIR

PROCEDURE

1.  Open the Worksheet and fill in the header information.

2.  The laboratory instructor will set the oscillator at some definite frequency f1, and inform you what this frequency is. Record the value in cell B14 on the Worksheet. Plug in the cables to the BLUE terminals.

3.  Next, determine the locations of a minimum of three (preferably more) points of maximum loudness in the resonance tube. Use the hearing tube for best results. Record these data in cells B17:B22 of the Data Table on the Worksheet.

4.  Your Instructor will set the audio oscillator to another frequency, f2. Record the value of the frequency in cell C14. Repeat the above procedure for determining the maxima and recording the locations in cells C17:C22 on the Worksheet.

5.  Your Instructor will set the audio oscillator to another frequency, f3. Record the value of the frequency in cell D14. Repeat the above procedure for determining the maxima and recording the locations in cells D17:D22 on the Worksheet.

6.  Record room temperature in degrees Celsius, and enter the value in cell D34. The value of the actual speed of sound at this temperature will appear in cell D35. DO NOT ALTER this entry.

7.  Your Instructor will set the audio oscillator to an unknown frequency, fx. Repeat the above procedure for determining the maxima and recording the locations in cells E17:E22 on the Worksheet.

8. Print the Worksheet and use it to develop your lab report.
