Experiment 14
ARCHIMEDES' PRINCIPLE

PROCEDURE

1.  Open the Worksheet and fill in the header information.

2.  Measure the length and diameter of each cylinder provided, and enter the data in cells C10:D14 on the Worksheet.

3.  Determine the volume of the rock using the displacement method with the graduated cylinder and enter the value in cell E15. Don't forget to convert to units of m3 for the volume.

4.  Measure the mass of these objects and record in cells F10:F15

NOTE: In the measurements below, the balance measures mass in grams. You must convert this to a weight by multiplying the mass in kg by 9.8 m/s2.

5.  Determine the weight of each of the objects while suspended in air, Wo, and while suspended in water, W1. Refer to Figure 14-1 for an illustration of how this is done. Enter the data in cells C23:D28 of the Worksheet.

6.  Determine the weight of each of the cylinders when suspended in the mystery solution, W2, and enter in cells E42:E46 of the Worksheet.
