ANALYSIS

Complete the information and questions below and turn in the completed Worksheet with the completed lab report to your lab instructor.

1.  Answer Questions 1 through 4 on the Worksheet. Specifically, explain the origin of the following two equations:

ΔV = ( 2Δd / d + ΔL / L) V

and

Δρ = ( Δm / m + ΔV / V) ρ

2.  Compare your overall average density with typical values for metals found in a table such as the one in your text or in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Use these results to infer the probable metallic composition of your cylinders and enter the answer on the Worksheet at cell G205.

3.  For the graphical analysis of mass vs. volume, the spreadsheet prints out an equation in the form y = mx + b for your data. The slope m of this equation represents the density. Compare the value of the two slopes obtained from the measurements with a meter stick against those using the vernier in cells F209 and F210. Finally, compare the slope from the second (vernier data) graph against the numerical value from cell D155.

4.  Answer Question 5.
