Experiment 18
THE CONVERGING LENS

ANALYSIS

1.    Use the data you have collected in Procedure 3 to calculate the quantity:

For each object distance, enter the value of 1/f in cells E51:E59. Determine the focal length f for each value of do, and enter in cells F51:F59 on the Worksheet.

2.    Find the average focal length from the above data and enter it in cell F60.

2.    Determine  for each do value, and enter in cells C68:C76. Calculate the ratio , and enter in cells F68:F76.

3.    Compute the percentage error between the ratio of distances and the ratio of heights, and enter the result in cells G68:G76.

4.    Use your estimate of the magnification of the virtual image in Procedure 5 to determine the height ratio , and thus the distance ratio . Record this value in cell D84.

5.    Since the object distance is known, determine the (virtual) image distance di, and enter the value in cell D85. Use the thin lens formula to compute the focal length f, and enter in cell D86.

6.    Answer Question 4 on the Worksheet.

7.    Submit the completed Worksheet as part of your lab report.
