Experiment 14

REFLECTION and REFRACTION

of LIGHT

ANALYSIS

Locating the Bulb Filament: 1.    In steps 4 and 5 of the Procedure, measure the distance between your reference mark and the point of intersection of the rays, and enter the value in cells F98.

2.    Compare the measurement with the direct value recorded in cell F49. Calculate the percentage error in the measurement and record in cell F100.

Image Formation in a Plane Mirror: 5.    Measure the perpendicular distance from the source to the plane of the mirror d1, and enter the value in cell F102 on the Worksheet. Determine the perpendicular distance from the image of the filament to the plane of the mirror, d2 , and enter the value in cell F103.

6.    Find the percentage difference in the above distances and enter the result in cell F105.

Law of Refraction: 7.    Construct a graph with qr on the x-axis, and qi on the y-axis, for each incident angle. Draw the best curved line you can through the data.

8.    Pick one of the refraction data points in cells D87:D96. Use a pocket calculator to find the sine of the incident angle, sin qi , and the sine of the refracted angle, sin qr . Enter these values in cells F108:F109.

9.    Take the ratio of sin qi to sin qr, and enter the result in cell F111 as the index of refraction for the acrylic plastic out of which the cylindrical lens is made.

10.    Answer Question 8 on the Worksheet.

11.    Submit the completed Worksheet along with all ray tracings and graphs as part of your lab report.
