Prior to the advent of Quantum Mechanics, all phenomena in physics were treated either as waves or as particles, and even the language used to describe these two kinds of phenomena seemed incompatible. Quantum Mechanics resulted in a new unifying conception of physical phenomena at the microscopic level -- particles and waves were simply two aspects of the same phenomena.
