Interference & Diffraction

The wave nature of light was discovered nearly two centuries ago. That was the beginning of what we call “physical optics”-- that branch of optics that depends on its wave nature. That discovery was that light exhibits two phenomena that only waves can exhibit -- interference and diffraction.
