Charles Coulomb (1796-1805)
Coulomb used a sensitive torsion balance to investigate the forces between charged pith balls.
He published Coulomb’s Law, which describes the electric force between electrically charged particles.
Notes:
Actually, Coulomb wasn’t the first to have the idea that the electrical force was an inverse square law, like Newton’s gravity, but he was the first to publish some precise measurements proving it. If you want to be a famous scientist, you have to publish!
