Because Franklin was such an important political figure for America, we often forget that he was an internationally respected scientist. The pictures shows one of his famous experiments in which he flew a kite as a thunderstorm was approaching and noticed electrical sparks jumping from a suspended metal key. This experiment established that lightning was an example of the kinds of electrical phenomena he and others were investigating in the laboratory.
